This unit

The HP/Agilent 5344S Microwave Source Synchronizer System phase-locks microwave sources to a stable reference, delivering precise frequency control and stability for demanding applications. Operating between 500 MHz and 18 GHz with 1 Hz resolution, the system integrates a microwave counter (HP 5342A or HP 5343A) with a source synchronizer unit (HP 5344A) to enable accurate frequency synthesis, measurement, and control across multiple operational modes.

Technical Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 500 MHz to 18 GHz (Option 043 extends to 26.5 GHz)

  • Frequency Resolution: 1 Hz

  • Phase Locking: DC-coupled FM input with 1–50 MHz/Volt sensitivity

  • Operating Modes: CW (Manual or Auto Lock), CW/Delta F Sweep (Manual or Auto Lock), Start/Stop Sweep (Manual or Auto Lock)

  • Frequency Markers: Up to four settable markers in CW/Delta F and Start/Stop sweep modes

Key Features The system supports narrow-band, phase-continuous sweep operation and wideband "Lock and Roll" sweep mode, which phase-locks the start frequency of swept sources to improve sweep accuracy and linearity. Phase locking is achieved through the microprocessor within the associated microwave counter. The microwave counter component operates as a standalone frequency counter when required. Auto-lock functionality is available via HP-IB interface. An auxiliary output is provided on multiband plug-ins for RF power conservation.

Typical Applications The 5344S enhances signal generator performance for narrow-band channel testing and frequency-selective device measurements. The "Lock and Roll" sweep mode is particularly suited to applications requiring improved swept accuracy and reduced frequency drift during wideband measurements.

Compatibility & Integration The system is compatible with sweep oscillators including the HP 8350B Sweep Oscillator and HP 8620C (with Option 011). Integration with microwave counters such as the HP 5342A and HP 5343A is standard. Microwave sources must feature a DC-coupled FM input for proper phase-locking operation.

Common HP / Agilent 5344S faults: YIG oscillator failure (no output or loss of lock), step attenuator wear (output drops or steps at set attenuation), ALC loop failure (uncontrolled output power), I/Q modulator assembly failure. HP/Agilent 836xx series most common faults are YIG oscillator failure and step attenuator contact wear causing output steps or drops at specific attenuation settings. Keysight E4428C/E4438C units most commonly develop ALC loop failure and I/Q modulator assembly faults. YIG oscillator replacement and attenuator service are stocked repairs.
