Keithley's switch-and-measure systems pair 7000-series scanner cards with a digital multimeter to multiplex dozens or hundreds of measurement points through a single meter under software control — the practical way to get high channel-count measurement without a separate meter per test point. VME and IndustryPack Board-Level Modules
A large share of this category is board-level hardware rather than complete instruments: Abaco Systems (formerly VMIC) VME analog and digital I/O boards, and IndustryPack modules that plug into a carrier card inside a VME, PCI, or cPCI host. Embedded and PC/104 Modules
RTD Embedded Technologies builds PC/104 form-factor DAQ boards aimed at rugged, embedded applications where a full-size chassis isn't practical. These stack directly onto a PC/104 embedded computer rather than needing a separate carrier, which makes them a different integration path from the VME/IndustryPack products above, even though the underlying acquisition function is similar.
What to Check Before Buying
For board-level products, confirm the bus/form factor matches your existing chassis or carrier before ordering — VME, IndustryPack, and PC/104 are not interchangeable, and a perfectly functional card is useless without the right host. For any acquisition hardware handling thermocouple, RTD, or strain-gauge inputs, check whether signal conditioning is built in or expected upstream, since raw ADC inputs generally aren't set up to read those sensor types directly. And for older boards, ask about driver/software support — some of this hardware predates modern operating systems and is realistically suited to repairing or extending an existing system rather than building a new one from scratch.
Calibration for DAQ Hardware
Standalone bench DAQ instruments and switch/scanner systems are typically calibrated as complete units against a traceable reference, the same as any other bench measurement instrument. Why do so many of these boards need a specific chassis or carrier to work? +
Form factor and bus protocol determine everything. A VME card only works in a VME crate with a compatible backplane; an IndustryPack module needs an IndustryPack carrier card, which itself has to be installed in a VME, PCI, or cPCI host. This is the single most important thing to check before buying a board-level DAQ product — the card being electrically sound doesn't help if you don't have the right chassis or carrier to put it in.

Keithley's 7000-series switch and scanner cards pair with a digital multimeter to multiplex many measurement points — dozens or hundreds of sensors or test points — through one meter, one channel at a time, under software control. If you're sourcing one of these to repair or extend an existing system, the practical requirement is usually that the host chassis and software environment already exist and match what the board expects — this is surplus/replacement hardware for an existing automated test or data-acquisition system, not a general-purpose acquisition solution for a new PC-based setup.
Do I need separate signal conditioning for thermocouple or strain-gauge inputs? +
Often yes. A raw analog-to-digital converter board typically expects a voltage or current signal within its input range; a thermocouple's millivolt-level output or a strain gauge's bridge signal usually needs amplification, cold-junction compensation, or bridge excitation upstream of the ADC itself. Check whether the board or system you're buying includes that signal conditioning built in, or whether it expects a separately conditioned input.
