How we evaluate and list every instrument

Seven steps, every unit, no exceptions. Here is exactly what happens between when an instrument arrives at our bench and when it shows up in the listing.

Sourcing and intake

We source instruments from production line decommissions, university lab sales, telecom field equipment, and private party sellers. Every unit is logged with make, model, and serial number at intake before anything else happens.

We do not list instruments we cannot physically inspect. No blind dropshipping, no untested lots, no "as described by the seller" listings. If we cannot put it on a bench and verify it ourselves, it does not go on the site.

Physical condition inspection

Before power-on, the instrument is inspected for physical damage, port and connector condition, display integrity, and cosmetic wear. We check optical input ports under magnification for scratches, chips, or contamination. RF connectors are checked for pin damage and contact wear.

We assign a condition grade based on what we actually see — new, new open box, refurbished, or used. Any damage or wear is noted in the listing exactly as found, not softened.

Bench power-on and functional test

The unit is powered on and tested for basic function: display, front-panel controls, all accessible ports, and any built-in self-test routines. For optical instruments we verify the source output power and wavelength, detector sensitivity, and any motorized mechanisms (attenuators, filters, tunable laser elements). For RF instruments we verify signal output, frequency accuracy, and attenuator step function.

Anything that fails at this stage goes to repair before it can be listed.

Repair (if needed)

If the unit fails any part of the functional test, we repair it in-house. We do not list instruments as "for parts only" unless they are genuinely unrepairable — cracked substrates, missing ASICs, catastrophic damage.

Common repairs we perform in-house: optical port connector replacement, laser diode and pump laser replacement, step attenuator mechanism service, V-groove and electrode replacement on fusion splicers, display and keypad repair, and power supply service. All repair work is verified with a post-repair functional test before the unit moves to calibration.

NIST-traceable calibration

Instruments that require calibration are calibrated in-house against NIST-traceable reference standards. Our calibration covers the parameters the instrument is designed to measure — wavelength accuracy for OSAs and wavelength meters, power level accuracy for power meters and attenuators, frequency and amplitude accuracy for signal and function generators, and distance and loss accuracy for OTDRs.

We issue a calibration certificate showing the instrument serial number, calibration date, reference standard traceability chain, and measured values at each test point. The calibration date and certificate are included with every calibrated unit.

Photography

We photograph the actual unit — not stock photos, not a representative image pulled from the manufacturer's website. Every listing shows the front panel (display powered on), rear panel, serial number label, all optical and RF ports, and any cosmetic marks noted in the condition description.

What you see in the photos is the physical unit that ships. We do not swap units after photos are taken.

Listing, packing, and shipping

The listing is written with the real serial number, real calibration date, real condition grade, and any known limitations noted plainly. We do not use superlatives or sales language that overstates the instrument's condition.

When an order is placed, the instrument is wrapped in anti-static material and double-boxed with foam suspension. We include all accessories, cables, adapters, manuals, and calibration certificates that came with the unit. Tracking is provided. We ship from Pleasant Grove, UT, typically within one business day of order.
