What to Look for in a Used Optical Transceiver Tester

The key decision is whether the platform supports the transceiver form factors you need to test now and in the next few years. A 10G SFP+ tester bought in 2018 may not handle 100G QSFP28 or 400G QSFP-DD modules without an interface card upgrade. Check whether upgrade cards are still available and priced reasonably before committing to a platform. On platforms like the EXFO FTB-1 Pro, the mainframe is the long-lived investment — interface modules are interchangeable.

The second consideration is optical accuracy. The Tx power measurement accuracy is what determines whether the instrument catches a marginal transceiver that is 0.5 dB below its minimum Tx spec. Platforms calibrated within the past year and with known optical power reference accuracy (±0.5 dB or better) are the reliable choice for production incoming inspection.

Transceiver Tester Calibration and Repair

Optical power reference drift is the most common calibration issue in transceiver testers. The InGaAs detector inside the tester measures Tx power from the device under test — if that reference has drifted, every Tx power measurement is offset. We calibrate the optical power reference at 850 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm and issue a certificate with measured uncertainty. It depends on the tester. SFP/SFP+ testers handle 1G and 10G modules in the small form-factor pluggable cage. XFP testers handle 10G in the larger X2/XFP cage. QSFP28 testers handle 100G quad small-form-factor modules. Most modern platforms (EXFO FTB-1 Pro, Spirent, Anritsu MT1000A) accept modules via interchangeable interface cards. What is DDM / DOM and how does a transceiver tester read it? +

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), also called Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), is a standardized interface (SFF-8472 for SFP, SFF-8636 for QSFP) that exposes real-time transceiver parameters: Tx power, Rx power, laser bias current, supply voltage, and temperature via I2C. A transceiver tester reads these registers and compares them against MSA alarm and warning thresholds to flag failing or degraded modules.

Can I test both optical and copper (DAC/AOC) transceivers? +

Optical transceivers (LX, SR, LR, ER, ZR variants) are tested optically — the tester measures Tx power into a reference fiber and Rx sensitivity from a calibrated source. Direct Attach Cables (DAC) and Active Optical Cables (AOC) are tested differently — DACs electrically, AOCs optically at the cable ends. Not all testers handle all types; check the instrument specification for the cable/transceiver types it supports.

What is the difference between a transceiver tester and a protocol tester? +

A transceiver tester (sometimes called a transceiver analyzer or SFP tester) measures the optical and electrical parameters of the module itself — Tx power, Rx sensitivity, wavelength, eye diagram. A protocol tester (Spirent, Ixia, VIAVI) generates and analyzes traffic at rates from 1G to 400G, measures frame loss, latency, and jitter. Many high-end platforms do both, but they serve different purposes in a test lab.

How do I know if a used optical transceiver tester is still accurate? +

Request calibration records or a post-purchase calibration. The optical power reference accuracy in a transceiver tester is what determines Tx and Rx measurement accuracy — typically ±0.5 dB or better. Calibration drift in the optical power reference is the main accuracy concern. Eye diagram testers also need their timing reference (sampling oscilloscope or BER tester) verified. Do I need a transceiver tester or just an optical power meter? +
