What You Need Before Buying a VXI Module
VXI modules do not work standalone. You need three things: a mainframe (chassis), a slot-0 resource manager or command module, and appropriate drivers. The mainframe provides power and the VMEbus backplane. The slot-0 controller - usually a dedicated command module like the Keysight E1406A or a PC-based MXI/IEEE 1394 interface - manages the bus and provides the GPIB or Ethernet connection to your test software. If you are adding modules to an existing system, confirm the mainframe has open slots and that the new module's driver is compatible with your existing software stack.
For new system builds, Keysight IO Libraries Suite (free) covers virtually all Agilent/Keysight VXI modules under VISA. National Instruments NI-VXI works across vendors. If you are working on a defense depot system with a legacy controller, check whether the existing command module supports the module register map before ordering.

Keysight E1xxx Series - Reading the Model Numbers
Keysight's E1xxx numbering is not intuitive but follows internal product-line logic. The 13xx range covers measurement and switching: E1310-E1320 are multiplexers, E1326 is a temperature scanner, E1330 is digital I/O, E1340-E1365 are relay matrices and switch modules. The 14xx range covers signal generation and measurement: E1410-E1415 are DMMs and scanning voltmeters, E1418 and E1428 are DAC output modules, E1426-E1439 are wideband digitizers and signal analyzers. The E84xx and Z24xx series are RF switching modules designed for microwave switching matrices in signal routing applications.
Within each model number, letter suffixes indicate revision: A is first release, B adds speed or resolution improvements, C adds firmware features. In most cases A and B modules are interchangeable in the same measurement application - the choice between them is budget, not capability, unless you specifically need the higher speed or accuracy of the B revision.
Racal 1260-Series Modules
The Racal 1260-series was designed for the Racal 1261 VXI mainframe and is now manufactured and supported by Astronics Test Systems following their acquisition of the Racal instruments line. The 1260-13 through 1260-18 family covers relay scanners and multiplexers; the 1260-20 series handles bridge measurements and strain gauges; the 1260-30 series are DMMs; the 1260-35 and 1260-37 are signal generators and AWGs; the 1260-38 is a digitizer; and the 1260-45 series are high-voltage relay scanners rated for signals up to 600 V. These modules are heavily used in structural test, engine test, and environmental test systems in the aerospace industry.
Driver support for Racal/Astronics modules under Astronics ATML and TestStar is current. NI LabVIEW drivers exist for most 1260-series modules. If you are sourcing Racal modules to maintain or expand an existing bench, confirm the 1260-xxx suffix digits - the suffix encodes channel count, voltage range, and relay type, and substituting the wrong variant will cause calibration or range errors.
Ametek/VTI and VXI Technology Modules
Ametek VTI Instruments (formerly VXI Technology) produces the SM/SMP series signal multiplexers and the VM/VT series measurement modules. The SM series are passive signal conditioners and multiplexers for connecting transducer arrays to a central digitizer; the SMP series adds built-in protection for signals that may carry fault voltages. The VM series are standalone voltage measurement modules with their own ADC. The VT series are temperature measurement modules for thermocouple and RTD inputs. These modules are particularly common in structural dynamics test, turbine engine test cell instrumentation, and automotive durability testing.
VXI Module Calibration at Aumictech
We provide NIST-traceable calibration for VXI DMMs, scanning ADCs, DAC output modules, and switch/relay verification for the Keysight E1xxx family and selected Racal 1260-series modules. Calibration includes measuring actual accuracy against NIST-traceable references and adjusting calibration coefficients to bring the module to within its published accuracy specification. Calibration certificates include measured data for each range tested.
For relay modules, we perform contact resistance verification and isolation checks across all relay channels. Worn relays in a matrix module are individually replaceable - a module with a few failed relays does not need to be discarded. Contact us with the specific model and symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a VXI module and what mainframe does it require? +
VXI (VME eXtensions for Instrumentation, IEEE 1155) is a modular instrument standard built on the VMEbus backplane. A VXI module slots into a VXI mainframe - also called a chassis or cardcage - which provides power, cooling, and the system bus. Common mainframes include the Keysight E1300B, E1301B, E4500 series, and the Racal 1261 series. The mainframe also needs a slot-0 resource manager or command module to control the bus; without it the modules will not communicate.
What is the difference between C-size and B-size VXI modules? +
VXI modules come in four mechanical sizes designated A through D. B-size (233.35 mm high, single-width) is the smallest common form. C-size (233.35 mm high, double-width) is the most prevalent and what most Keysight E1xxx and Racal 1260-series modules use. D-size is full-height and used for high-power or high-density modules. Module size determines which mainframe slots it fits - a C-size module occupies one slot in a C-size mainframe. Mix B and C in the same frame only with a size-B adapter.
Are used VXI modules compatible with all VXI mainframes? +
Physically, any C-size module fits any C-size mainframe slot. Functionally, the module needs a compatible slot-0 controller and appropriate VISA/VXIplug&play drivers. Keysight E1xxx modules work in any VXI mainframe but are best supported by Keysight E1300/E1400 series mainframes and Keysight IO Libraries Suite. Racal 1260-series modules are designed for the Racal 1261 mainframe. Cross-vendor use is possible but may require custom driver configuration or a VISA resource manager from a third party like National Instruments.
What is the difference between VXI, PXI, and LXI? +
VXI (1987) uses the VMEbus backplane and is the oldest standard - still dominant in aerospace and defense ATE systems built before 2005. PXI (1997) uses the CompactPCI backplane and is the current mainstream modular standard for new automated test equipment. LXI (2005) is Ethernet-based with no backplane at all - modules are standalone instruments with a LAN interface. If you are buying VXI it is almost always to expand or maintain an existing VXI system, not to start a new one.
Do used VXI modules still have software driver support? +
Yes, for the major families. Keysight IO Libraries Suite (free download) includes VISA drivers and IVI drivers for virtually all Keysight/Agilent/HP E1xxx, E2xxx, E4xxx, E6xxx, and E8xxx VXI modules. National Instruments NI-VXI and NI-VISA also support these modules. Racal modules require the Racal TestStar or Astronics ATML-compatible drivers. For modules from smaller vendors, driver availability varies - confirm before purchasing if you need out-of-the-box SCPI or VXIplug&play support.
What types of measurements can Keysight E1xxx VXI modules make? +
The E1xxx family covers most measurement types. DMMs include the E1410A, E1411B, and E1412A. Scanning ADCs and wideband digitizers are the E1413 series, E1426A, and E1429 series. Digital I/O is the E1330B. Switch and relay matrices include the E1330B, E1361A, E1364A, E1460A, and E1466/E1467 series. Signal sources are the E1328A and E1347A DAC modules. For RF work, the E1437A is a dynamic signal analyzer module and the Z2404/Z2468 are RF switching matrices.
Is VXI still used in aerospace and defense testing? +
Yes, heavily. Most U.S. military and aerospace automated test equipment built between 1990 and 2010 is VXI-based, and those systems are still in active service with long planned lifespans. Depot maintenance, production test, and calibration labs at defense contractors and military depots continue to require VXI modules as spares, replacements, and for system expansion. VXI has no scheduled end-of-life in the defense sector - it will be maintained as long as the platforms it tests remain operational.
Need a specific VXI module or a matched set?
We source specific VXI modules on request and can help identify compatible replacements for modules that are no longer manufactured. If you need a specific E1xxx slot configuration, a set of matched Racal modules, or help identifying what module is in a position in an existing ATE rack, send us the details and we will respond same business day.
