AC Source vs Variac vs Isolation Transformer — What You Actually Need
A variac (autotransformer) adjusts voltage by tapping the mains winding — it tracks the mains frequency exactly, produces no isolation, and cannot simulate abnormal frequency conditions. An isolation transformer provides galvanic isolation at a fixed voltage. A programmable AC source does both and more: it synthesizes the AC waveform from scratch, letting you set any voltage from 0 to rated max, any frequency from 15 Hz to 1000+ Hz (model dependent), and on many units reproduce non-sinusoidal waveforms. For international product testing, avionics bench work (400 Hz aircraft power), or any test that requires a documented, repeatable AC input condition, a programmable source is the correct tool.

What We Test Before Listing Any AC Source
Output voltage accuracy is verified at 100 V, 120 V, and 230 V set points using a calibrated Keysight 34461A true-RMS DMM. Frequency accuracy is checked at 50 Hz and 60 Hz with a Keysight 53230A frequency counter.
