What's in This Category
"Industrial controllers" covers a wide range of hardware. This inventory includes four distinct product types that are often sourced together in industrial, research, and defense environments:
- PLCs - Rockwell Allen-Bradley, Siemens SIMATIC, OMRON, GE Fanuc. Hard real-time discrete and analog I/O control for machines and processes.
- Temperature and process controllers - Watlow, Schneider/Eurotherm, Omega, Honeywell, Yokogawa. PID control for thermal chambers, reactors, furnaces, and fluid systems.
- Laser diode controllers - ILX Lightwave LDC series, ThorLabs ITC series. Precision constant-current drive and TEC temperature control for laser diodes in photonics and fiber optic labs.
- Embedded controllers and DAQ - NI CompactRIO, NI CompactFieldPoint. FPGA + real-time processor platforms for custom control and measurement applications.
ILX Lightwave LDC Series - What to Know Before You Buy
The ILX Lightwave LDC-3900 is a modular mainframe that accepts interchangeable current source and TEC controller plug-in modules. A bare LDC-3916 mainframe does nothing by itself - you need at least one current source module (e.g., LDC3916338 for 38 mA, LDC3916376 for 376 mA) and optionally a TEC module to control temperature. Make sure the module current rating matches your laser diode's operating current; driving a 20 mA DFB with a 376 mA module is possible but the low-end resolution may not meet your noise requirements.
Standalone LDC units (LDC-3742, LDC-3762, LDC-3752M) combine current source and TEC in one box - simpler for single-channel work. The LDC-3742 is the most common bench unit we see; the LDC-3762 handles higher currents up to 2 A for high-power diodes. ThorLabs ITC series (ITC8022, ITC8052, ITC8102) are direct competitors with a similar dual-function design.
Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC Compatibility Notes
Rockwell ControlLogix (1756 series) and CompactLogix (1769 series) modules are the most common Allen-Bradley hardware we stock. These modules are designed to be interchangeable within a chassis, but firmware compatibility matters: a 1756-L73 processor running firmware v30 will not fully support modules that require v33. If you are replacing a module in an existing system, confirm the series letter (A, B, C) and firmware revision before purchasing. Rockwell's Knowledgebase has compatibility matrices for all 1756 and 1769 modules.
Siemens S7-300 and S7-400 CPUs use STEP 7 Classic (versions 5.x). These are stable legacy platforms with a large installed base in European manufacturing. If the CPU has a retentive memory card (MMC), the program may still be on the card - confirm with the seller whether the memory card is included. Siemens 6ES7 972-series PROFIBUS connectors are common accessories that often ship with the CPU.
Calibration and Testing Services
Temperature controllers and process instruments are calibrated against NIST-traceable standards. If you need a calibration certificate with measured data for a Watlow, Eurotherm, or Omega unit, see our calibration services page. For laser diode controllers, we verify current accuracy and TEC control function before listing; full metrology-grade current calibration is available on request.
For PLC testing, we power on and confirm I/O operation. Full FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) with your specific program and I/O mapping is available as a service - contact us to discuss requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PLC and what industries use them? +
A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a ruggedized digital computer designed for industrial automation - monitoring inputs (sensors, switches) and controlling outputs (motors, valves, actuators) in real time. PLCs are used in manufacturing, automotive assembly, food and beverage processing, semiconductor fab equipment, water treatment, and power utilities. Unlike a PC, a PLC runs a deterministic scan cycle and is designed to operate continuously in environments with dust, vibration, and electrical noise. Brands in our inventory include Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley), Siemens SIMATIC, OMRON, and GE Fanuc.
What is a laser diode controller and why do labs use ILX Lightwave or ThorLabs? +
A laser diode controller (LDC) provides precision constant-current drive and temperature stabilization for laser diodes and superluminescent LEDs used in optical fiber, photonics, and spectroscopy applications. The current must be stable to microamps to avoid mode hopping and wavelength shift; the temperature must be stable to millikelvins for wavelength-sensitive work. ILX Lightwave LDC-3900 series and ThorLabs ITC series are the two most widely used platforms in research and commercial photonics labs. The LDC-3916 mainframe accepts interchangeable plug-in modules for driving multiple lasers from one chassis.
What programming software does each major PLC brand use? +
Allen-Bradley Logix5000-based PLCs (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) use Rockwell Studio 5000 Logix Designer. Siemens SIMATIC S7-300/400 uses STEP 7 Classic; S7-1200/1500 uses TIA Portal. OMRON CJ/CS series uses CX-Programmer (part of CX-One). GE Fanuc Series 90 and VersaMax use Proficy Machine Edition. Most of these software packages are available on subscription or one-time license; some older versions are available free from the manufacturer for legacy maintenance work.
What are NI CompactRIO and CompactFieldPoint used for? +
CompactRIO (cRIO) is a National Instruments embedded controller that combines a real-time processor with an FPGA in a rugged chassis, programmed using LabVIEW FPGA. It is used for high-speed control, custom signal processing, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. CompactFieldPoint (cFP) is an older NI distributed I/O platform for slower process measurements and control - temperature, voltage, current - over Ethernet. Both platforms are common in research labs, university test benches, and industrial prototyping.
What is a temperature controller and when should I use PID control? +
A temperature controller compares a measured temperature (from a thermocouple or RTD) to a setpoint and drives a heater or chiller output to minimize the error. Simple on/off controllers cycle the output fully on or off, which causes temperature oscillation. PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controllers calculate a variable output that reduces overshoot and holds the temperature closer to setpoint - necessary for processes where ±0.5 °C stability matters. Watlow, Eurotherm/Schneider, Omega, and OMRON temperature controllers in our inventory are PID-capable. The Watlow 988 and Eurotherm 2116 series are widely used in thermal test chambers and semiconductor process equipment.
Can I use a used PLC in my existing production system? +
Yes, with a few precautions. The firmware version of the replacement PLC must match or be compatible with your existing program. Allen-Bradley ControlLogix modules are generally backward-compatible within a revision range, but you should confirm the series letter and firmware revision before swapping. OMRON and Siemens PLCs are similarly revision-sensitive. Battery-backed memory modules should have the battery tested or replaced. We test power-on and basic I/O function on all PLCs before listing; if you need a specific firmware version confirmed, contact us before ordering.
What is the difference between a VFD and a servo controller? +
A variable frequency drive (VFD) controls the speed of an AC induction motor by varying the output frequency and voltage. VFDs are used where speed control matters but precise position is not required - pumps, fans, conveyor belts. A servo controller (servo drive) provides closed-loop position and velocity control for a servo motor using encoder feedback, enabling precise positioning, fast acceleration, and torque control. Yaskawa products in our inventory include both VFDs (Varispeed/A1000 series) and servo drives (Sigma series). Use a VFD for speed control; use a servo system for precision motion.
Need a specific PLC model, firmware version, or LDC module?
