62.5/125 µm multimode fiber (OM1) was the dominant installed multimode type in North American enterprise and campus networks from the late 1980s through the late 1990s. Enormous quantities remain in buildings, data centers, and campuses. Nobody builds new plant on it — 50/125 µm provides higher bandwidth at lower cost — but the installed base is too large to replace all at once.

InfiniCor 300 is the correct fiber for matching that installed plant. Splicing 50/125 µm multimode into a 62.5/125 µm span causes a mode mismatch loss: light expanding from the smaller core to the larger core is manageable in some cases, but 62.5-to-50 µm splices in the signal direction produce significant loss due to the mode field mismatch. When adding to an existing 62.5/125 µm system, use the same fiber type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade a 62.5/125 µm network to 10G? +

10GBASE-SR over 62.5/125 µm OM1 fiber reaches only about 33 m, which is not a practical campus or data center link distance. For 10G over existing 62.5/125 µm plant, the realistic options are using 1310 nm single-mode optics (10GBASE-LRM extends 10G to 220 m on OM1 with modal dispersion equalization) or replacing the fiber. 10GBASE-LRM optics are expensive. For links over 100 m, re-cabling with OM4 is usually the most cost-effective long-term solution.
