Corning SMF-28 Ultra 200 Bare Optical Fiber
SMF-28 Ultra 200 is the same fiber as SMF-28 Ultra in all optical parameters, with a 200 µm coating instead of 242 µm. The reduced coating diameter is the only change, and it exists to serve high-fiber-count cable designs where cross-section and weight per meter are the governing constraints.
- ITU-T standard
- G.652.D + G.657.A1
- Mode field diameter
- 9.2 ± 0.4 µm @ 1310 nm
- Cladding diameter
- 125.0 ± 0.7 µm
- Coating diameter
- 200 ± 5 µm (reduced diameter)
Attenuation, mode field diameter, PMD, and bend performance are identical to SMF-28 Ultra: 0.32 dB/km at 1310 nm, 0.18 dB/km at 1550 nm, 9.2 µm MFD, G.652.D and G.657.A1 compliant. The 200 µm coating reduces the fiber outer diameter by 42 µm — roughly 17 percent. In a 288-fiber ribbon cable or a tight-buffered high-count cable, this difference in per-fiber diameter translates to a meaningfully smaller cable outer diameter and lower weight per kilometer.
Splicing to installed SMF-28 Ultra (242 µm coating) or SMF-28e+ (242 µm coating) is performed the same way. The coating is stripped before the splice, so the coating diameter has no effect on fusion splice results. The 9.2 µm MFD and 125 µm cladding are the compatibility numbers that matter.
Specify Ultra 200 when your cable design team has called out 200 µm coating, or when routing through conduit where pulling tension and conduit fill calculations favor the smaller diameter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the optical performance difference between SMF-28 Ultra and Ultra 200?
None. The attenuation, MFD, PMD, and bend performance specifications are identical. The 200 µm coating is a mechanical change only, intended for high-fiber-count cable applications where the smaller per-fiber diameter reduces cable size and weight.
Does the 200 µm coating affect splicing?
No. Fusion splicers strip the coating before the splice, so the coating diameter is irrelevant to splice performance. The 9.2 µm MFD and 125 µm cladding govern compatibility with installed plant.
