Corning SMF-28e+ Bare Optical Fiber

SMF-28e+ is the G.652.D standard-bearer that was the default single-mode fiber for carrier, data center, and enterprise builds for more than a decade. It remains widely deployed and is still a current Corning product.

ITU-T standard
G.652.D
Mode field diameter
9.2 ± 0.4 µm @ 1310 nm
Cladding diameter
125.0 ± 0.7 µm
Coating diameter
242 ± 5 µm

Corning SMF-28e+ delivers 9.2 µm mode field diameter, zero water peak per ITU-T G.652.D, 0.34 dB/km maximum attenuation at 1310 nm, and 0.19 dB/km at 1550 nm. PMD coefficient is specified at 0.1 ps per root-km, which supports 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s systems on virtually any installed length. Coating is 242 µm dual acrylate.

If your spec sheet calls out SMF-28e+ specifically, we supply SMF-28e+ rather than substituting SMF-28 Ultra or another G.652.D product. The optical parameters are compatible but the fiber identity on a certificate of compliance is what acceptance testing and network documentation require.

For new builds the SMF-28 Ultra offers better attenuation and macrobend performance with the same 9.2 µm MFD, so it splices directly to installed SMF-28e+ plant without any mode-field mismatch. If you are extending an SMF-28e+ span, the Ultra is worth considering. If you are replacing a reel in a system that is already characterized on SMF-28e+, supply the same fiber.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SMF-28e+ and SMF-28 Ultra? +

Both are G.652.D. SMF-28 Ultra adds G.657.A1 bend compliance, better attenuation (0.32 dB/km at 1310 nm vs 0.34, and 0.18 dB/km at 1550 nm vs 0.19), and lower PMD (0.04 ps/root-km vs 0.1). The mode field diameter is the same at 9.2 µm, so they splice to each other without mismatch. For new builds the Ultra is the better fiber. For exact-match replacement of installed SMF-28e+ plant, we supply SMF-28e+.

Does SMF-28e+ support 100G transmission? +

Yes. SMF-28e+ supports 100G DWDM using coherent transceivers over typical carrier span distances. 100GBASE-LR4 and PSM4 interfaces specify G.652.D fiber. For very long DWDM spans where accumulated dispersion or PMD is a concern, the SMF-28 ULL or TXF fiber offers lower loss and PMD, but for most data center and metro 100G deployments SMF-28e+ is the standard choice.

What coating does SMF-28e+ use? +

SMF-28e+ uses a 242 µm dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coating. For high fiber count cable designs where cross-section is the constraint, the SMF-28 Ultra 200 is the same fiber with a 200 µm coating. The optical parameters are identical.
