Corning TXF Bare Optical Fiber

TXF is Corning's longest-reach terrestrial-grade fiber, built to ITU-T G.654.E with ultra-low attenuation and a large effective area. It is designed for extended-reach coherent DWDM links at 100 Gb/s and above where both span loss and nonlinear noise set the amplifier spacing.

Attenuation is 0.157 dB/km or below at 1550 nm — among the lowest available in a commercial terrestrial fiber. Effective area is approximately 125 µm², which is substantially larger than the 80 µm² of standard G.654.C fibers like SMF-28 ULL. The large effective area reduces optical nonlinear effects (four-wave mixing, cross-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering) that degrade DWDM channel quality at high per-channel power levels.

The combination of low attenuation and large effective area increases the maximum amplifier spacing on a high-capacity DWDM route. On a 5000 km terrestrial backbone designed for 400G coherent channels, TXF can reduce the required number of inline amplifier sites by 15-25 percent compared to standard G.654.C fiber. Each amplifier site eliminated removes optical amplifiers, power systems, shelter, maintenance, and right-of-way costs.

TXF is the right choice for national backbone infrastructure where long-term capacity expansion is planned and the capital cost of fiber per route kilometer is justified by the reduction in active equipment. It is not a cost-effective choice for metro or regional builds where the spans are short and nonlinear effects are not the system limit.
