This unit

The Agilent 8720A is a vector network analyzer operating from 130 MHz to 20 GHz, delivering S-parameter measurements across microwave and RF applications. This integrated instrument combines a synthesized swept source, switching S-parameter test set, and dual-channel receiver in a single platform. It performs full 2-port error correction, supports multiple calibration connector types (3.5 mm, 7 mm, Type-N, and user-defined waveguide kits), and measures all four S-parameters with a single connection.

Dynamic range exceeds 85 dB, with solutions extending to 100 dB when Option 003 is installed.

Technical Specifications

  • Frequency range: 130 MHz to 20 GHz

  • Frequency resolution: 100 kHz (standard) or 1 Hz with Option 001

  • Dynamic range: >85 dB (forward dynamic range up to 95 dB with Option 003; solutions up to 100 dB with Option 003)

  • Source output power: −65 dBm to −10 dBm, settable in 5 dB steps

  • Source stability: Within 10 ppm (typical)

  • Receiver: Two independent display channels with variable bandwidth IF filters

  • Error correction: Full 2-port

  • Internal bias tees: Two for active device biasing through test ports

Key Features

  • Integrated swept synthesized source eliminates external source requirements

  • Large full-color display with multiple data formats: log magnitude, linear magnitude, SWR, phase, group delay, polar, real, and Smith Chart

  • Frequency subset capability allows zooming into specific response areas without recalibration

  • Limit testing: defines up to 22 test limits per channel for pass/fail decisions

  • Direct save/recall to external disk drive

  • HP-IB programmable interface

  • Built-in vector accuracy enhancement

Typical Applications Incoming inspection and production testing of microwave components, radar and satellite system characterization, RF network design validation, and final test procedures.

Options

  • Option 001: 1 Hz frequency resolution

  • Option 003: Extended dynamic range (forward up to 95 dB; solutions to 100 dB)

  • Option 010: Time domain capability for computing and displaying time domain response
