This unit
The EXFO FTB-1-720-12CD-23B is a handheld quad-wavelength OTDR for field characterization, troubleshooting, and certification of singlemode and multimode fiber networks. Operating at 850 nm, 1300 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm, this module delivers dynamic range up to 36 dB at 1310 nm and event dead zones as low as 0.8 m, enabling precise fault location and link analysis across diverse cable plant configurations. The FTB-1 platform provides a dual-core or quad-core processor, 4 GB RAM, Windows 10 OS, and an 8-inch touchscreen display with 1280 × 800 resolution, establishing a compact field computer capable of advanced test automation and data logging. Dual SC connectors
UPC for multimode (850/1300 nm) and APC for singlemode (1310/1550 nm) - support interchangeable adapters. Trace resolution extends to 256,000 points. Optional integrated tools include Visual Fault Locator, Optical Power Meter with calibration across 850–1650 nm, and Fiber Inspection Probe. Rechargeable Li-ion batteries and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity enable extended fieldwork and remote data transfer. The 1625 nm filtered port supports live fiber testing on singlemode links. Multimode dynamic range may reduce by 3 dB when testing 50 µm fiber versus 62.5 µm.

Exfo FTB-1-720-12CD-23B — Repair & Calibration Service
Aumictech offers NIST-traceable calibration and repair for the Exfo FTB-1-720-12CD-23B. Calibration covers distance accuracy verified against a calibrated fiber length reference, event loss measurement accuracy at splice and connector events, dead zone (event and attenuation) at rated pulse width, dynamic range verification at 1310 nm and 1550 nm, backscatter coefficient calibration, and return loss measurement accuracy. All calibrations ship with a NIST-traceable certificate. Turnaround is typically 1–3 business days after receipt.
Common Exfo FTB-1-720-12CD-23B faults: optical port connector damage or contamination, battery failure, display damage from field use, module failure on FTB or MTS platforms, calibration drift. Most field OTDRs fail due to physical damage. On modular platforms (EXFO FTB, Viavi MTS), individual module failures are serviced without replacing the entire mainframe. Optical port cleaning resolves many apparent measurement faults before mechanical repair is needed.
