This unit

The IP-MP-Serial is a dual-channel IndustryPack module engineered for high-speed serial communication across EIA-232, EIA-422, and EIA-485 standards. Built around the Zilog Z16C30 Universal Multi-Protocol Serial Controller, it delivers independent channels with four 32-byte FIFO buffers per channel and support for synchronous protocols including SDLC, HDLC, bisynchronous, NRZ, NRZI, Biphase, and MIL-STD-1553B. Each channel features its own baud rate generator, digital phase-locked loop, vector register, interrupt controller, and protocol controller, enabling flexible multi-protocol operation in demanding embedded and industrial systems.

Technical Specifications

  • Serial Controller: Zilog Z16C30 Universal Multi-Protocol Serial Controller (USC)

  • Serial Ports: Dual (2) independent channels

  • Standards Supported: EIA-232, EIA-422, EIA-485 (EIA-485 factory special order on some variants)

  • Data Rates: Up to 10 Mb/s synchronous with external clock

  • FIFO Buffers: Four 32-byte buffers per channel (transmit and receive)

  • On-board Oscillator: 3.6864 MHz for standard baud rates

  • External Clock Lines: Four (4) for full-duplex synchronous operation

  • CRC Support: 16- and 32-bit generation and checking

  • Character Configuration: 1–8 bits per character with one address/data bit support

Key Features

  • Per-channel baud rate generator with digital phase-locked loop for clock recovery

  • Sync stripping and preamble generation capabilities

  • Configurable handshake and clock signal support

  • RS-422 transceivers on EIA-485 TxD lines, switchable under software control for transmit or receive operation

  • RS-422 transceivers on TxC lines

  • Independent interrupt vectors and interrupt control per channel

  • User-supplied oscillator provision for non-standard baud rates

Typical Applications Serial protocol conversion, multi-protocol industrial gateways, avionics and defense data interfaces, embedded systems requiring dual synchronous/asynchronous serial channels with hardware protocol acceleration.

Compatibility & Integration Designed as an IndustryPack module for integration into carrier boards supporting the IndustryPack standard. Supports full handshake and clock signal interfacing for diverse peripheral devices and synchronous communication systems.

Abaco Systems / SBS / Greenspring IP-MP-Serial — Repair & Calibration Service

Aumictech offers NIST-traceable calibration and repair for the Abaco Systems / SBS / Greenspring IP-MP-Serial. Calibration covers analog input channel accuracy and offset at all gain settings, analog output accuracy, digital I/O logic threshold verification, sample rate and timing accuracy, and trigger and synchronization bus functional verification. NI CompactRIO and PXI chassis also undergo backplane trigger line integrity check.. All calibrations ship with a NIST-traceable certificate. Turnaround is typically 1–3 business days after receipt.

Standard Cal
$450
Pass/fail cert + NIST sticker
Cal with Data
$650
Full NIST cert with measured values

Common Abaco Systems / SBS / Greenspring IP-MP-Serial faults: power supply failure (cRIO-9073/9074), C-series slot connector wear, PXI chassis fan failure, GPIB interface failure on VXI controllers, BIOS/EEPROM corruption. NI CompactRIO most common faults are power supply failure on older cRIO-9073/9074 chassis and C-series module slot connector wear from repeated hot-swap cycles. PXI chassis fan failure is the most common wear item — chassis fans are field-replaceable. VXI embedded controllers most commonly develop EEPROM corruption and GPIB interface failure.

Abaco Systems / SBS / Greenspring IP-MP-Serial price
