This unit
The Agilent/Keysight 8672S Synthesized Signal Generator is a RF and microwave test instrument that combines the 8672A Synthesized Signal Generator with the 86720A Frequency Extension Unit. This integrated system delivers precision signal generation across 10 MHz to 18.0 GHz with flexible modulation, extensive programmability, and exceptional output control.
Technical Specifications
Frequency Coverage: 10 MHz to 18.0 GHz Output Power:- 0.01–2.0 GHz: +13 dBm to −120 dBm
- 2.0–18.0 GHz: +2 dBm (or +7 dBm with Option 008) to −120 dBm
- Level flatness degrades ±0.25 dB relative to the 8672A Frequency Tuning Resolution: Selectable via front panel - 100 MHz, 1 MHz, 10 kHz, or 1 kHz. At 1 kHz resolution: 1 kHz (2.0–6.2 GHz), 2 kHz (6.2–12.4 GHz), 3 kHz (12.4–18.599997 GHz) Modulation Capability: AM, FM, and pulse modulation. Internal pulse modulator delivers high-quality pulse signals across the full 10 MHz to 18 GHz range with >80 dB ON/OFF ratio. AM Depth: Selectable ranges of 30% and 100%, linearly variable with external voltage FM Deviation: Five selectable ranges (0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1.3, and 10 MHz), linearly variable with external voltage Frequency Stability: Locked to internal 10 MHz reference or external 5/10 MHz oscillator Leveling Control: Internal ALC for exceptionally flat output power; external leveling supported via diode detector or power meter Phase-Locked Outputs: 10 MHz and 100 MHz available on rear panel
Key Features
- Full HP-IB programmability for all functions except line switches and meter mode
- Front panel meter displays output level, AM depth, or FM peak deviation
- Low spurious signals and phase noise
- Single 9-inch high package: 222 mm (H) × 425 mm (W) × 620 mm (D)
Typical Applications Demanding RF and microwave testing, component characterization, and subsystem validation across L-, S-, C-, X-, and Ku-band frequencies.
Compatibility & Integration Existing HP 8672A generators can be retrofitted to 8672S configuration using the 86720A Frequency Extension Unit and either an 11731A or 11732A Frequency Extension Retrofit Kit.

Agilent / Keysight 8672S — Repair & Calibration Service
Aumictech offers NIST-traceable calibration and repair for the Agilent / Keysight 8672S. Calibration covers output frequency accuracy, output power level accuracy across the full frequency range, AM/FM/PM/pulse modulation accuracy, harmonic and spurious output levels, and phase noise floor verification. All calibrations ship with a NIST-traceable certificate. Turnaround is typically 1–3 business days after receipt.
Common Agilent / Keysight 8672S faults: YIG oscillator failure (no output or loss of lock), step attenuator wear (output drops or steps at set attenuation), ALC loop failure (uncontrolled output power), I/Q modulator assembly failure. HP/Agilent 836xx series most common faults are YIG oscillator failure and step attenuator contact wear causing output steps or drops at specific attenuation settings. Keysight E4428C/E4438C units most commonly develop ALC loop failure and I/Q modulator assembly faults. YIG oscillator replacement and attenuator service are stocked repairs.
