This unit

The Abaco Systems VMIPCI-5588-201 is a high-speed fiber-optic reflective memory module for distributed computing systems requiring real-time data synchronization across multiple nodes. Operating at 1.2 Gbaud serial data rate, this PCI bus-compatible board delivers 29.5 Mbyte/s standard throughput or 14.8 Mbyte/s with redundant error-suppression mode. The reflective memory architecture automatically mirrors writes from any node to all networked nodes, maintaining data consistency without processor overhead.

Technical Specifications

  • Interface: PCI Bus, single 5 V slot, standard length board

  • Serial Data Rate: 1.2 Gbaud

  • Peak Throughput: 29.5 Mbyte/s (standard); 14.8 Mbyte/s (redundant mode)

  • On-board Memory: Configurable 256 Kbyte to 16 Mbyte SDRAM

  • Network Nodes: Up to 256 nodes

  • Maximum Distance: 1,000 feet (304.8 m) multimode fiber; 10,000 meters single-mode fiber; 30 meters twinax cable

  • Interrupts: Single-command generation to individual nodes or all network nodes

  • Data Buffering: Transmit and Receive FIFOs optimize CPU and bus performance during peak rates

  • Endian Configuration: Selectable for multi-architecture networks

  • Digital Output: Software-addressable bit for user-defined control or optical switch interfacing

Key Features

  • Zero-processor-overhead network operation

  • Error detection with configurable redundant transmission mode

  • Fiber-optic (multimode/single-mode) and twinax connectivity options

  • Compatible with 5588 series products

  • Cross-CPU-architecture support via configurable endian conversion

Typical Applications Real-time distributed computing, high-throughput data sharing across clustered systems, deterministic inter-node communication requiring sub-processor latency, fault-tolerant memory architectures.

Compatibility & Integration Device drivers and Internet Protocol support available for Windows NT (VMIPCI/SW-RFM1). Full compatibility with other 5588 series reflective memory modules.

Common Abaco Systems / VMIC VMIPCI-5588-201 faults: power supply failure (cRIO-9073/9074), C-series slot connector wear, PXI chassis fan failure, GPIB interface failure on VXI controllers, BIOS/EEPROM corruption. NI CompactRIO most common faults are power supply failure on older cRIO-9073/9074 chassis and C-series module slot connector wear from repeated hot-swap cycles. PXI chassis fan failure is the most common wear item — chassis fans are field-replaceable. VXI embedded controllers most commonly develop EEPROM corruption and GPIB interface failure.
