The Keysight (Agilent) E4400A is an analog RF signal generator delivering precise signal generation from 250 kHz to 1000 MHz. Built for receiver testing, component characterization, and local oscillator applications, this instrument combines reliable performance with excellent spectral purity and flexible modulation capabilities.


Technical Specifications

Frequency coverage spans 250 kHz to 1000 MHz with 10.0 mHz resolution. Frequency switching completes in <35 ms (modulation off) or 17 dB hold level with <25 ms switching speed (<210 ms with power search enabled). Output impedance is 50 ohms. Spectral purity defines this generator's performance. SSB phase noise measures <-120 dBc/Hz at 20 kHz offset (500 MHz) and <-116 dBc/Hz (1000 MHz). Residual FM in CW mode stays below 2 Hz or 4 Hz depending on phase noise selection. SWR remains <1.4:1 across the frequency range. The instrument integrates wideband FM and phase modulation with a built-in function generator. Step sweep functionality covers frequency, power, and list modes with dwell times from 2 ms to 60 sec and up to 401 sweep points. The standard internal reference oscillator exhibits ±2 ppm/yr aging and ±1 ppm temperature stability. External reference inputs accept 1, 2, 5, or 10 MHz signals (±10 ppm typ.), and a 10 MHz timebase output is provided.
